New website features millions of chemical analyses from Deepwater Horizon oil spill

NOAA announced the release yesterday of a comprehensive, quality-controlled dataset  that gives ready access to millions of chemical analyses and other data on the massive Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. The dataset, collected to support oil removal activities and assess the presence of dispersants, wraps up a three year process that began with the gathering of water samples and measurements by ships in the Gulf of Mexico during and after the oil release in 2010. 

NOAA was one of the principal agencies responding to the Macondo well explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, and is the official ocean data archivist for the federal government. While earlier versions of the data were made available during and shortly after the response, it took three years for NOAA employees and contractors to painstakingly catalog each piece of data into this final form.

This Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill dataset, including more than two million chemical analyses of sediment, tissue, water, and oil, as well as toxicity testing results and related documentation, is available to the public online at: http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/deepwaterhorizon/specialcollections.html.

A companion dataset, including ocean temperature and salinity data, currents, preliminary chemical results and other properties collected and made available during the response can be found at: http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/deepwaterhorizon/insitu.html.

The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill response involved the collection of an enormous dataset. The underwater plume of hydrocarbon -- a chemical compound that consists primarily of the elements carbon and hydrogen -- was a unique feature of the spill, resulting from a combination of high-pressure discharge from the well near the seafloor and the underwater application of chemical dispersant to break up the oil. 

“The size and scope of this project -- the sheer number of ships and platforms collecting data, and the broad range of data types -- was a real challenge. In the end, it was a great example of what can be accomplished when you bring together the expertise across NOAA, making this quality-controlled information easily available to the general public for the first time,” said Margarita Gregg, Ph. D., director of the National Oceanographic Data Center, which is part of NOAA's Satellite and Information Service.

The effort to detect and track the plume was given to the Deepwater Horizon Response Subsurface Monitoring Unit (SMU), led by NOAA’s Office of Response and Restoration, and included responders from many federal and state agencies and British Petroleum (BP). Between May and November 2010, the SMU coordinated data collection from 24 ships on 129 cruises.  

The SMU data archived at NOAA’s National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) is already being used by researchers at NOAA and in academia for a range of studies, including models of oil plume movement and investigations of subsurface oxygen anomalies. In addition to NODC, other parts of the NOAA archive system such as NOAA’s National Geophysical Data Center and the NOAA Central Library contain important holdings. Recently, the library‘s Deepwater Horizon Centralized Repository won recognition from the Department of Justice “as one of the best successes in the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) world last year.”

By law, these data will remain available through NOAA’s archive systems for at least 75 years. Additional data from the Deepwater Horizon/Macondo spill can be found at the NOAA oil spill archive website: http://www.noaa.gov/deepwaterhorizon/ and data collected in the on-going Natural Resource Damage Assessment can be found at: http://www.gulfspillrestoration.noaa.gov/.

Storm threatens China chemical plant (AFP)

BEIJING (AFP) – China battled Monday to avert a disaster at a chemical plant on its northeast coast as a severe tropical storm that has killed three people in South Korea approached.

Workers were rushing to repair a dyke protecting a chemical plant after it was breached by high waves in the province of Liaoning, where the storm was expected to make landfall later Monday.

Residents near the Fujia Group plant in the port city of Dalian were evacuated as a precaution, the state Xinhua news agency said in a report confirmed by an official with the Liaoning border police.

The official, who refused to be named, would not provide further details when contacted by AFP.

Authorities did not say which chemicals were in danger of spilling from the plant, which makes paraxylene -- a flammable, carcinogenic liquid used in the production of polyester films and fabrics, Xinhua said.

Torrential downpours and high winds unleashed by Muifa -- which was a typhoon before it weakened to a severe tropical storm -- have already wreaked havoc along China's eastern coast, as well as neighbouring South Korea.

Airlines cancelled hundreds of flights and thousands of fishing boats were ordered to stay in port over the weekend as Muifa approached. It had initially been due to hit Shanghai, but changed course and travelled north instead.

The storm drenched the eastern province of Shandong, where more than 100,000 people were moved to safety, local authorities said.

US oil giant ConocoPhillips was also forced to suspend clean-up operations on a two-month-old oil spill in Bohai Bay off the coast of Shandong due to the storm, the firm said in a statement.

"Clean-up activities will resume as soon as it is safe to do so," it added.

Muifa also left three people dead and one missing as it battered nearby South Korea with strong rain and winds that toppled hundreds of power lines, signposts and trees.

Power was cut to 320,000 houses in southwestern provinces, while roads, port facilities and breakwaters were destroyed in dozens of locations.

A 76-year-old fisherman was found dead Sunday on the southern South Korean island of Wando. A man in his 40s drowned after being swept away by stormy seas in the southern port of Busan.

A 50-year-old woman was found dead Monday after falling into a flooded stream in Hwasun in the southwest and a 65-year-old man was reported missing in Busan.

Muifa is also due to hit North Korea -- which neighbours Liaoning province -- on Monday night.

The impoverished state is still reeling from summer downpours and floods that have killed 30 people, destroyed more than 6,750 houses and inundated more than 48,000 hectares (120,000 acres) of farmland.

Authorities in Dandong, a border city in Liaoning, have set up more than 750 temporary shelters that are capable of accommodating more than one million people, Xinhua reported.

Thousands of soldiers are also on standby to conduct rescue and relief work after the storm passes, it said.

Muifa has already destroyed nearly 170 houses and caused damage worth 1.9 billion yuan ($290 million) in the eastern province of Zhejiang, where one person went missing over the weekend after a boat sank.

But so far, the storm has not caused as much damage as initially feared.

Authorities had expressed concern that Muifa could cause destruction similar to that unleashed by Typhoon Saomai in 2006, which was the worst to hit China in 50 years and killed at least 450 people.

Watermelons explode in China, overspraying of growth chemical blamed

Danyang, China (AHN) - Overripe watermelons on 115 acres of farmland in eastern China have exploded and investigators have linked the incident to the overuse of a chemical that makes the fruit grow fast.

Wang Liangju, a professor at Nanjing Agricultural University, blamed the exploding watermelons on the overspraying of forchlorfenuron by farmers in Danyang city, Jiangsu province.

However, there were watermelons not sprayed with the chemical that also exploded and agricultural experts blamed it to the weather. Apparently, heavy rains fell on the watermelon farms after a recent drought.

One farmer saw one-third of his watermelon crops ruined. He admitted spraying the chemical on May 6 and 180 melons burst the following day, the local media reported. Another farmer who did not spray forchlorfenuron on his watermelon farm saw some fruits explode.

Forchlorfenuron is not banned by the Chinese government as the chemical is safe.
