Wildfires scorch Alberta

Slave Lake, Alberta, Canada (AHN) - Wildfires are racing across Alberta, threatening a recent oil spill and causing the evacuation of hundreds.

Of the 97 wildfires across the Alberta, the worst are near the town of Slave Lake, located 250 kilometers (155.3 miles) north of Edmonton. Two of the fires are out of control, causing the evacuation of more than 200 residents from Poplar Lane and Mitsue and destruction of 10 structures, including homes.

Slave Lake town officials issued an evacuation order on Sunday evening as the blaze threatened the town and nearby areas.

Similar evacuation orders have been made for 800 to 900 residents of Wagner, Widewater, Bayer Road, Sawridge Reserve West, Canyon Creek and Assineau.

Of the 74 fires still burning in Alberta as of Sunday morning, 67 of the blazes were started in the past 24 hours and 37 of these are considered out of control. Alberta's fire officials said the fire risk in extreme throughout the province because of high winds, hot temperature and dry conditions.

A clean-up crew at a marsh near Little Buffalo had to stop operations to remove 28,000 barrels of oil that spilled on April 28 because of the threat of two nearby fires.

The fires have burned over 95,000acres of land in Alberta.
